Each year the California desert hosts what is considered by some as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam. Indian Wells, or the BNP Paribas Open, is a combined event that comes under the Masters 1000 for men and is qualified as Premier Mandatory for women plays. Set in the Coachella valley, amidst the palm trees and the idyllic setting of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden which features a centre court with more than 16,000 seats, the world’s best play under the California sun in early March to compete for a prestigious title. On the men’s side, the “Big Four” have often succeeded (5 titles for Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, 3 for Rafael Nadal), while the women’s side has seen more variety (no woman has three titles). The unique surface and game conditions (wind, desert climate) allow any game style to prevail. In 1990, Stefan Edberg and Andre Agassi played a superb final match there that is still fresh in many memories.
