He will be remembered, amongst other things, as the one who broke Novak Djokovic at the US Open. Daniil Medvedev did not only win his first major, he also showed that he was taking over from the three giants that are Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. What a long and winding road since him memorable 2019 summer with six consecutive finals, including his first in a Grand Slam at the US Open. Gilles Cervara’s player went on to win the Masters 1000 event in Paris, before being crowned at the ATP finals. A few weeks later, his runner-up position at the 2021 Australian Open allowed him to reach his best ranking to this day : world number 2. Since 2005, no other player than Djokovic, Nadal, Federer or Murray had managed to reach this spot. Well known for his on court antics, Daniil was only missing a title in a major. This could be the beginning of a long streak.
