Conchita MARTINEZ

aka

Conchita Martinez was often overshadowed by her contemporary rivals, but she is now getting recognition for her work coaching Garbine Muguruza.

Prior to that, the Monzon native won the Fed Cup five times as a player and served as captain of the Spanish women's team and the Davis Cup team. Not too shabby! It seems she always wanted to stand out from the crowd: although a clay court specialist, she won her only major at Wimbledon against the woman who held the record for London victories, Martina Navratilova. Martinez is still one of just two Spanish women – with Sanchez-Vicario – to have reached the semifinals in the four Grand Slam tournaments. But of course she shone most brightly and most often at Roland-Garros, although she never managed to raise the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup. Her performance is still impressive with one final, 7 quarter-finals and 3 semifinals. Defeated by Mary Pierce in the final, Martinez also faced off against Steffi Graf four times in Paris. The Spaniard is a wine connoisseur who spends some of her time in San Diego, California. She lives life to the fullest when she is not on tour with her player. Good choice!
