2019 : a year that needed to quickly be forgotten for Garbine Muguruza. She did exactly that by reaching the final of the first Slam the following year. It was about time ! Yes that day on court Suzanne Lenglen of May 28th 2014 seemed very far away. Not very well known, Garbi had beaten on that day world number 1 Serena Williams in the 2nd round. The tall brunette (1m82) from Caracas (her mother is from Venezuela, her father from Spain), had repeated the exploits : runner-up in Wimbledon in 2015, champion in Roland-Garros in 2016. In 2017, the reggae fan that she is, won her second major in Wimbledon, and became number 1 in the world for the next 4 weeks. It was only then that Garbine seemed to need a breather. in August 2018 she was ousted from the Top 10 where she had remained for over 50 consecutive weeks. It is former champion, Conchita Martinez, her new coach, that was able to help her bounce back. In 2021, she captured her 8th title in Dubai, and in July, found her way back in the Top 10.
