The tennis news (but not only) of the week : Federer already out, and a trendy egg.
In this day after day by We Are Tennis by BNP Paribas, we look back on Federer, Wozniacki and Murray’s defeats, as well as the Instagram post which got the most likes in history : the picture of an egg.

Monday, January 14th

It’s the « No Pants Subway Ride day » in New York… where many people were logically seen in their underwear in the tube! Things also kicked off at the Australian Open in Melbourne, as Katie Boulter became the first person in the history of the tournament to win a super tie-break (6-0, 4-6, 7-6 against Ekaterina Makarova). In the men’s draw, the spectators saw 87 aces in the duel of giants between Reilly Opelka and John Isner (7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6). The American became the first member of the top 10 to be knocked out this year. Andy Murray possibly played the last match of his career, and despite his courage, he ended up being defeated by Roberto Bautista-Agut (6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-2). We’ve got some bad news to finish with : Paweł Adamowicz, the mayor of Gdansk (Poland) died after being stabbed in public. RIP.

Tuesday, January 15th

After Boulter, Jérémy Chardy. The Frenchman, who defeated Ugo Humbert (3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6), became the second player in history to qualify after winning a super tie-break. He managed to avoid the heatwave of the day, unlike the five players who had to withdraw from the tournament in the men’s draw this Tuesday. Daria Kasatkina, on her side, finished her match, but was even more disappointed: Tiema Bacsinszky crushed her (6-3, 6-0), even though the Russian was leading 3-0… By the way, sleeping with a stranger on the first encounter is highly likely to lead to a love story, as a study from the University of Rochester (USA) has recently proven.

67-2. That’s the score of aces shot in the match between Opelka and Thomas Fabbiano. Surprisingly, the latter won the match after winning the super tie-break (6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6). Even more surprising? Venus Williams’ served was measured at 200km/h against Alizé Cornet (6-3, 4-6, 6-0). Speaking of surprises, we’ve seen Kevin Anderson, the number 5 seed, lose against Frances Tiafoe (4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5), the match between Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Konta start at 00:30 (a record in the history of Grand Slam tournaments; the Spaniard won 6-4, 6-7, 7-5) and the picture of an egg setting a record of likes on Instagram. 25 million people « liked » it.

58-8. hat’s the score of aces shot in the match between Ivo Karlović and Kei Nishikori. Surprisingly, the latter won the match after winning the super tie-break (6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6). Friday, January 18th

Some fresh faces, and the usual contenders. At only 17, Amanda Anisimova qualified for the fourth round of the Australian Open after easily defeating Aryna Sabalenka (6-3, 6-2). Which makes her the youngest woman since Nicole Vaidišová in 2006 to reach this stage of the tournament. The more famous Maria Sharapova defeated the title-holder Caroline Wozniacki (6-4, 4-6, 6-3). The day finished with some promising news: the brand Organic Basics announced that it was working on creating underwear which could be worn for three consecutive weeks without getting dirty. Looking forward to it.

Saturday, January 19th

A minute of silence for Boo, « the cutest dog of the internet » (sixteen million fans on Facebook) who sadly passed away at the beginning of this weekend. Alexander Zverev doesn’t really seem to care, as he complained about his body. « I’m still the skinny dude on the tour, even if I’ve gained fifteen kilos, said the one who just defeated Alex Bolt (6-3, 6-3, 6-2) to qualify for the fourth round. I’ve been called 'the asparagus' a few times (…). When Rafa Nadal wears his sleeveless t-shirts, it’s intimidating. If I did it, everyone would laugh. » No one is laughing at Simona Halep, who defeated Venus Williams (6-2, 6-3) and is now the record-holder of the number of major tournaments played by a female player in the Open era (81). And all of that in front of 93 178 spectators in Melbourne, which is another record.

Sunday, January 20th

What a day! The losers of the day were Maria Sharapova, who was defeated by Ashleigh Barty (6-4, 1-6, 4-6), Angelique Kerber, who was crushed by Danielle Collins (0-6, 2-6), Sloane Stephens, who was knocked out by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (7-6, 3-6, 3-6), Grigor Dimitrov, who struggled against Tiafoe who became the first American to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Australian Open since Andy Roddick in 2010 (5-7, 6-7, 7-6, 5-7), and Marin Cilic, who was destroyed by Bautista-Agut, who qualified for the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time of his career (7-6, 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6)… But the major loser of the day was Roger Federer, who surprisingly lost against Stefanos Tsitsipas, as the Greek was on fire (7-6, 6-7, 5-7, 6-7). « I will play at Roland-Garros » said the Swiss immediately after his defeat, to conclude this crazy day. And to cap it all off, we’ve learned that a 33 year-old Irish man was regularly self-injecting semen in his blood to treat his chronic back pain. Crazy, we tell you.
